How To Prevent Rust Forming On Your Bike

How To Prevent Rust Forming On Your Bike

Rust is slow, silent damage — the kind that compromises performance and eats away at your bike’s lifespan. The good news: it’s completely preventable with the right habits and protection.

1. Understand What Causes Rust

Rust forms when moisture reacts with exposed metal. Chains, bolts, and frames are most at risk — especially in humid climates or after wet rides.

2. Clean Regularly

Dirt holds moisture against metal, accelerating corrosion.

  • Use: Finish Line® Super Bike Wash™ to clean frames, wheels, and components.

  • Degrease: Apply Finish Line® Citrus Degreaser to chains and derailleurs to strip grime and salt buildup. Always rinse gently and avoid high-pressure sprays that can force water into bearings.

3. Dry Completely

Moisture left behind after cleaning is a major rust trigger.
Use a clean cloth to dry every component, and compressed air for hard-to-reach areas like derailleur pivots and cable ports.

4. Lubricate and Protect

A thin protective coating keeps moisture where it belongs — out.

  • Chain: Apply Finish Line® 1-Step Cleaner & Lubricant to form a corrosion-blocking barrier.

  • Frame and Components: Use Finish Line® Showroom Polish & Protectant™ to leave a slick, dust-repelling finish that also seals out moisture.

5. Store Properly

If possible, keep your bike indoors. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, use a breathable, water-resistant cover and ensure good airflow.
