How To Service Your Suspension Forks
Your suspension fork is one of the hardest-working components on your bike. It absorbs every impact, smooths every descent, and keeps your front wheel planted where it belongs. But inside those stanchions and seals, oil breaks down, dirt accumulates, and performance gradually fades.
Servicing your suspension once or twice a year restores that “factory-new” feel — improving traction, control, and overall ride quality. Here’s how to do it right using Finish Line® Shock Oil and Max Suspension Spray™.
1. Remove the Fork and Release Air Pressure
Start by removing the fork from your bike. This gives you better access to every component and prevents accidental contamination of your frame or brake system. Before disassembly, note your preferred air pressure — you’ll need to restore it later.
This step sets the foundation for a clean, controlled workspace, ensuring nothing interferes with your reassembly.
2. Drain the Old Suspension Fluid
Over time, suspension oil loses its viscosity and becomes contaminated with dust and microscopic metal particles. That buildup reduces responsiveness and increases friction inside the fork.
Remove the lower bolts and slide the fork lowers down carefully to drain the old oil. Capture the fluid in a container and dispose of it properly — fresh oil is only as clean as the system it goes into.
3. Detach the Lower Legs
Once drained, remove the lowers entirely to expose the internal components. This allows you to clean every surface that contacts oil or air pressure — the key to restoring smooth performance.
4. Remove and Inspect the Foam Rings
Beneath the dust wipers, you’ll find the foam rings. Their job is to trap dirt before it reaches the fork seals — but over time, they dry out and lose effectiveness. Inspect them closely. Replace if worn, or clean if still in good condition.
Healthy foam rings mean cleaner oil and longer intervals between major services.
5. Clean and Re-Lubricate the Foam Rings
Soak the rings in the appropriate Finish Line® Shock Oil to dissolve trapped dirt and grime. Then, transfer them into a fresh batch of oil to fully re-lubricate. Let them soak for several minutes so they absorb the fluid evenly.
This step restores the ring’s ability to seal out contaminants and distribute lubrication evenly across the fork legs.
6. Clean the Lower Legs
Even the smallest residue can affect fork performance. Use Finish Line® Super Bike Wash™ inside and out to break down any lingering grime. Wipe thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth until the surface feels smooth and dry.
A spotless lower assembly ensures your new suspension oil stays uncontaminated — and your fork feels consistent on every ride.
7. Reassemble and Add Suspension Fluid
Reinstall the lubricated foam rings and slide the lowers halfway onto the upper tubes. Using a syringe, add the manufacturer’s recommended amount of Finish Line® Shock Oil to each leg.
Shock Oil not only restores the damping feel but also protects internal seals and bushings from wear. Be precise here — oil volume directly affects performance.
8. Reassemble and Recharge
Once filled, fully reinstall the lowers and hardware. Recharge the fork to your recorded air pressure settings. At this point, your fork should feel smooth and consistent through its travel.
9. Clean and Relubricate
Before finishing, wipe down the stanchions and seals with a clean cloth dampened in Finish Line® Super Bike Wash™ to remove any contaminants. Then apply a light coat of Finish Line® Max Suspension Spray™ to the stanchions and dust seals.
This step creates a protective film that minimizes friction, repels dirt, and keeps your suspension feeling supple between rides.
