How To Prepare Your Bike For Winter Storage
When winter rolls in, proper storage isn’t just about finding a corner in the garage — it’s about protecting your investment and making sure your bike is ready to roll the moment spring returns.
1. Start with a Deep Clean
Salt, dirt, and grime left over from fall rides are the biggest enemies of metal components.
-
Degrease: Apply Finish Line® Speed Degreaser™ to the chain, cassette, and derailleur pulleys. Pro Tip: Use Finish Line® Gear Floss™ to reach tight spaces like cassette cogs and derailleur pulleys.
-
Wash: Use Finish Line® Super Bike Wash™ to remove surface grime from the frame and wheels.
-
Lubricate: Once dry, coat the drivetrain with Finish Line® Wet Lubricant or 1-Step Cleaner & Lubricant to leave a corrosion-resistant film. Wipe off any excess to prevent buildup.
-
Protect: Apply Finish Line® Showroom Polish & Protectant™ to the frame and components to restore shine and create a protective layer against dust, dirt, and moisture during storage.
2. Grease Critical Metal Components
Temperature swings and humidity can seize bolts, pedals, and bearings.
-
Use: Finish Line® Premium Grease on threads, pivots, and bearings to block moisture and prevent corrosion.
3. Inflate and Inspect Tires
Keep tires within their recommended pressure range to prevent sidewall cracking or flat spots. Check for embedded debris or worn tread before storage.
4. Choose the Right Environment
Store your bike in a dry, temperature-controlled space — a basement, utility room, or dry garage is ideal.
Avoid cold floors and damp corners; hanging or using a stand relieves pressure on tires.
5. Cover, Don’t Seal
Skip plastic covers that trap condensation. Use a breathable bike cover to protect from dust without locking in moisture.
6. Prep Accessories
Remove lights and batteries to prevent leaks. Check spare tubes and CO₂ cartridges for next season.
Pro Tip: Schedule a Spring Tune-Up before your first ride. It’s the best way to catch hidden wear before it causes issues on the road.
